>> mitt romney's margin of victory in virginia was 20 points. ron paul second with 40%, ricked santorumnd newt gingrich failed to meet the requirements to appear on the virginia ballot. in prince georges county tonight, councilwoman karen toll says she is sorry for speedinging on the beltway. tolls was clocked doing 105 miles a hour in a county car two weeks ago. police originally gave her a warning. yesterday though, they upped the punishment to a $500 fine and six points on her license. at a very brief news conference today, toll says she takes the situation seriously. >> i offer my utmost and sincere apologies for this, my constituents and colleagues as well as all county residents. i trust that we can now move forward with the very important business of the county and i thank you for your cooperation and support. >> the council took away the county car that tolls was driving. she also plans to take a driver improvement class. a murder investigation is under way in montgomery county after a man was found shot to

death in a house on superior court in the aspen hill area around 3:30 this afternoon. police believe the victim and the shooter did know each other. officers are searching yairt but no arrest. the gunman was seep wearing a navy blue north face jacket and black timberland boots. a gunman burst into a house and robbed several students from george mason university last night. erika gonzalez has our report. >> no one should have a gunpointed at them for whatever reason, especially being rob and at home where you feel safes where we didn't feel safe. >> reporter: george mayson sophomore pat evans says he and four other roommates got the surprise of their lives tuesday night around 11:00.

looking for clues they can snapped pictures of the packaging for a ski masks and gloves found near the home and collected it as evidence. the students say the thieves made entry into the home through a back door they forgot to lock and police say with as many people that come in and out of the house because of social gatherings, the thieves may have already known the layout of the home. >> people running around and screaming and calling each other names. in fairfax county, erika gonzalez, news4. another scare in our area today involving a suspicious white powder that was sent through the mail. this time, it went to an elementary school. the letter arrived to adam's oyster bilingual school this morning. police were called and students evacuated as a precaution. police found the powder was not hazardous and the students went become to class after noon. three similar suspicious letters have been sent to businesses in d.c. this week. mayor vincent gray today flatly denied ever handling any

cash or money orders during his campaign for mayor last year. unexplained cash and money orders worth tens of thousands of dollars are the focus of a federal investigation into today's campaign. tom sherwood with more on this tom? >> the very career around office could depend on the outcome of this proechblt he be. he insists he did nothing wrong. >> reporter: vince gray ran a short, hectic campaign for mayor in 2010, surprising many with his first campaign finance report in june 2010 showing more than $550,000 in contributions. including unusual money orders for cash and many maximum contributions of $2,000 from cities all around the country. sources tell news4 that even members of gray's own finance committee were surprised at the last-minute cash infusion in june. federal authorities last week raided the home and offices of local businessman jeff thompson, who was a major fund-raiser for

gray. sources say prosecutors are looking at the amount and source of contributions thompson handled. on wednesday, mayor gray said he personally had done some fund raising but he flatly denied that he had ever handled cash or money orders. >> did you ever bring any cash or money orders in yourself? >> no i asked mr. thompson to support my campaign. i never -- i never had any money orders, i never had any cash. those things that i actually directly brought in, they were checks. >> reporter: jeff thompson this week did not respond to nbc 4 seeking comment. the mayor told reporters wednesday he was not aware of anyone in his campaign converting cash to money orders or faking names of donors to cover up excess contributions.

ray says he spores the federal investigation, suggesting anyone with information could testify. >> we all know that there's an ongoing investigation with this and, you know, people wish to stand up and contribute information to that, they are perfectly welcome to. >> reporter: brown was in court on a traffic charge with a sentence suspended. prosecutors have declined to comment on any part of the investigation. jim? >> thanks, tom. the largest police union in an aroundel county is calling on the county executive and the police chief to resign over allegations of improper conduct. john leopold was indicted last friday on charges that he used his police security detail for campaign and personal tasks. james tear senior is the police chief. the baltimore sun reports last night a vote by the fraternal order of police tallied an overwhelming lack of confidence in the chief and in the county executive. leopold is promising to fight the charges against him. a spokesman says neither man has any intention of resigning. virginia governor bob mcdonnell has signed off on that controversial bill this afternoon requiring women to have an abdominal ultrasound

before they get a abortion. abortion providers across the state must start complying with this law in july. this bill originally called for a more invasive type of ultrasound, but after weeks of protest outside the capital, lawmakers amended that bill. attorn attorneys who are suing virginia tech over the massacre five years ago went after the campus police force today. lawyers for julia pride and aaron peterson says campus police botched the response to the shootings. today, they questioned the virginia tech detective who responded to the first killings on campus, stephanie gallery moore testified she believed the shootings involved a boyfriend and girlfriend and no other students were at risk. >> it is my opinion that he fled the scene, fled the area. >> in your opinion that led you to conclude as an experienced detective that there was no need to give any warnings out to anyone regarding the shooter being on the loose? >> it was not my decision on

this video shows a man being pulled out of a car after he slammed into a pole and flipped over. the driver refused to get out because he was drunk and he didn't want to get arrested. the officers say the flames were so intense they could feel the hair on their arms singe. yesterday, those officers received medals of valor. they say they are just doing their job. attempts to do away with the death penalty in maryland may have to wait for another year. today, state senator lisa gladden expects a bill dealing with the death penalty to die in committee. the death penalty has been on hold since 2006 when a court of appeals found there wasn't proper approval for lethal injection procedures. one of the deadliest crimes in the history of this city a couple weeks ago, five people killed in a series of shootings in southeast d.c. today, jurors heard from an

important witness, one of the alleged gunmen who testified against the others. pat collins has that. >> reporter: i knew what we did was wrong. every night i would think about it. i want to do what's right. the words of nathaniel sims. he said he was one of them. said he hung out with them. he said he went clubbing with them. he said he killed with them. in a blue prison jumpsuit, restrained by heavy prison chains, nathaniel sims took stand, took the oath and identified the five men linked to this bloody crime spree. march 2010, five dead, nine wounded in eight days, all over a missing fake diamond bracelet. sims said, i know i played a

major part in what was done. i expect to spend the majority if not the rest of my life in jail. the five young men charged, they come to court all dressed up, they look like they could be college frat brothers. all five today wearing glasses, but the prosecutor said four of the five never wore glasses before this trial. in court for the first time, the jury saw the ak-47, one of the weapons used in the murders. relatives of the victims broke down in tears. it was a particularly hard day for family members. >> left me kind of speechless, you know, to see such a massive weapon that destroyed a lot of lives. that was very painful to even look at that. >> tears in my eyes a couple of times but the whole family was crying, i was just trying to hold on, you know? >> reporter: did you get a

chance to see nathaniel sims? >> yes. >> reporter: what do you make of him? >> evil. evil. even though he starts turning state's evidence, he was evil. my son killed and had all the kids killed on south capitol. >> reporter: for the record, sims has pled guilty to five counts of murder, two counts of conspiracy to commit murder. he has yet to be sentenced. he has been moved from one jail to another for security reasons. i'm pat collins, news4. >> the trial is expected to last another two months. on capitol hill today, top pentagon officials pushing back against pressure on president obama to order military action in syria. joint chiefs chairman martin dempsey said the operation would be 100 times more challenging than the campaign against libya and defense secretary leon panetta said military intervention could make matters worse. arizona senator john mccain blasted panetta and said americans should help build an international coalition to stop the massacre of civilians. on monday, mccain also called for the u.s. to lead air strikes

in syria. in france, someone captured video of an avalanche at a popular ski resort there it happened over the weekend north of grenoble. dozens of people on the ski left when it hit. passengers were dangling in midair, people on the ground trying desperately to get out of the way. rescue hearse to use helicopters save the skiers. remarkably, nobody was seriously injured in that. unusually high temperatures may have contributed to the avalanche. >> you can even see the ground where the snow had come loose. >> there was no snow underneath that, so, that was fresh snow and warm air and saw how the power took down that ski lift, major power there. fantastic weather continues for the day tomorrow, look outside, video photographers toward lafayette park, right in front

i mitt romney says he is feeling good about his chances of getting the republican nomination. he took six super tuesday contests including an extremely close race in ohio. rick santorum won three, newt gingrich won georgia. the search continues for two gunmen who threat tonight kill george mason university students after they broke into their townhouse last night. the suspects took off with pricey laptops and cell phones. so far, nobody arrested.

prince georges county councilwoman karen tolls apologized today after she apologized for speeding on the belt watch she made ate poll jie during a brief news conference in largo this afternoon two weeks ago, she clocked going 105 miles an hour, fined $500 and got six points on her driver's license. tolls plans to take a driver improvement course. the fire chief sunder fire today over a sexual harassment allegation from his previous job. >> kenneth ellerbee took the helm of the fire department in december 2010 after six months in in sarasota, florida as chief. now some are questioning the hiring process. darcy spencer reports. >> i never meant to never intended to or never did harass anybody. >> reporter: ellerbee called to testify as chief of d.c. fire and ems department on the same

way the washington times reports a woman accused him of sexual harassment when he was fire chief in sarasota, florida. >> when i looked at the article, the deputy chief said my time there was valuable. >> reporter: he denies the allegations in a one-on-one article. >> the article said i didn't say anything to anybody that was disrespectful, accident trust anybody. >> reporter: newspaper reports the woman says ellerbee leered at her several times and dismissed her complaints with disparaging remarks and allegations by a couple of female firefighters and earliby looked them up and down and talked to their chests. >> i think what they were referring to was a uniform inspection activity. if you were to find out my name right now, how would you find out my name? >> looking at your tag. >> okay that's where most people in the public safety wear their identification. >> reporter: the report notes that ellerbee's personnel file in florida was not requested by d.c. officials. some critics of the chief have questioned what appears to be a lack of investigate of ellerbee before being named chief by friend and political ally mayor

vincent gray, who remains a strong supporter of the chief. >> i think chieflerby has done an exceptional job as the fire chief. >> no one looked into the file that was in sarasota and that should have been done. >> reporter: mayor gray told news4 that he was unaware of the sexual harassment complaint but said woe look into it. a man in rockville is charged with trying to hire a hitman to kill his wife and one of her friends. daniel mendoza offered an undercover officer $200 and the title to his car if he would murder his wife and her friend. the man reportedly told the officer he would return to his native honduras so he wouldn't be a suspect in the crime. police arrested mendoza after that meeting. a man who used to work at elementary schools in manassas is facing five dozen charges of sex abuse. stefan christian was indicted

yesterday. police say their investigation covers three decades and involves young children. christian was arrested last november after a victim said he was sexually abused from 1993 until 1997. after that, several more victims stepped forward -- or alleged victims stepped forward. christian worked a as kindergarten aide from 1981 to 1999. there is now a $3,000 reward in maryland for information that leads to the arrest of a driver involved in the hit and run. it happened one week ago on route 198 in laurel a metro bus camera captured video of the accident that shows a white pickup truck jumping a curb, hitting a man walking on the sidewalk. the truck then takes off. that victim was thrown over an embankment and into a parking lot and he has not yet been identified. a former corrections officer says he was humiliated when a prospective employer made him give up his facebook password sew could check his account.

robert collins is the man's name. he is fighting back now. today, he testified before lawmakers in annapolis to help push legislation for internet password protection. jane watrel reports. >> my privacy was invaded. i felt violated on so many levels. >> reporter: it's a gateway to the web, a log-in and password are the keys to internet privacy, so, imagine robert comes' shock last year when a prospective employer asked for the baltimore man's name and password to his facebook account during a job interview. >> it was ludicrous. it was ridiculous that anybody would want to do something like that, given the fact that it is password protected. >> reporter: robert and a representative from the american civil liberties union took their concerns to annapolis, testifying before the house economic matters committee. house bill 964 would prohibit employers from requiring or

requesting an employer applicant to disclose their privacy settings to social media sites as a condition of employment. >> we think this is like giving somebody the key to your house, to look at all your private possessions. >> reporter: colin was reapplying for a job with the maryland department of corrections. after he blew the whistle on the practice of inquiring about a job applicant's facebook privacy information, the policy was suspended for 45 days. robert got the job but has since quit to go to nursing school. he is hoping the bill will pass. >> if it's public, it's fair game but if it's behind a privacy wall or a password protected account, it is just unreasonable. >> reporter: the social media privacy bill is expected to pass the maryland senate on thursday. no word when the bill will come up for a vote in the house. jane watrel, news4. parents in maryland could soon be banned from smoking in the car if they have young children with them. state lawmakers are taking another look at a bill that would make it a crime to smoke in a car that has a passenger under the age of 8 and it would be a primary offense, meaning

been canceled. the organization behind the event converted to chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation today. it is now up to a court-appointed trustee to decide what happens next. the fair most recently took place on a park near king's dominion. it has been going on in the commonwealth for 156 years. nick cannon, the host of america's got talent, is taking on the issue of online privacy for kids. cannon met with students today at we the pizza on capitol hill. he talked about the dangers of companies looking to take advantage of minors online. earlier in the day, cannon endorsed a bill on capitol hill that would make it illegal to track children's web viewing habits. >> i don't want people tracking them, and i don't want them inspectly visiting someone else's page or someone else's site and people having their information and being able to talk to them like we don't want

welcome back, i'm meteorologist kammerer, coming to you with very warm temperatures, we got to 67 degrees out there this afternoon. 64 degrees, current temperature now, temperatures not going to drop a whole lot because of these winds out of the south-southwest right now you 15 miles per hour, winds gusting to 33 miles per hour, you also see beautiful sunset here. dust has come across our area, high clouds streaming on in. temperatures around the region,
